Rating:
Bring a commercial grade aquarium feeder to your home
aquarium with the Lifegard Automatic Fish Feeder with Expansion Hopper. Not
only is the automatic feeder compatible with pellet and flake food, but it
will also dispense dry medication as well. The feeder has fourteen available
bins, and with the expansion hopper, the feeder will dispense food for up to
four months, although that puts your food at risk of spoiling. The automatic
feeder is built with those with high demands in mind, and is built to last.
The automatic fish feeder comes with a
rotor table, and a powerful 115 Volt/60 Hz motor, as well as
an expansion hopper. It also includes a loading funnel, food
stick, food ramp, and arms required to dispense food 1
through 4 times daily.
If you are short on available outlets, you
will find the fact that the unity is powered by outlet power
an annoyance, but remember, you won't have to remember to
check batteries every few months. Like an wheel style
feeder, it is clumsy to try and load with food. Thankfully,
Lifegard supplies a funnel and a food stick to help keep the
food inside the feeder. Changing the dispenser frequency can
be more challenging than other models. The rotating arms are
held in place with small C clips, which tend to launch clear
across the room if your are not prepared. Once installed,
you will have a solid underlying configuration keeping the
rotor moving as you want. It also can dispense a minimum of
six hours apart and takes about 30 minutes to dispense a bin
of flake food. Drawing 5 watts of power, it consumes more
electricity than some other battery operated models, but the
power is necessary if you are using the hopper, especially
with pellets. It employs no method of combating humidity,
which is important, especially if you load it with four
months worth of food. It attaches firmly to the side of your
aquarium, and rests low, so in the event that it were to
fall, it would most likely wind up outside the aquarium.
Feeders are much safer when they are battery operated, but
it seemed to be a factor of consideration since the feeder
is built to keep the electric motor far from the aquarium.
The automatic feeder looks great on
aquariums 20 gallons or larger. Installed, the feeder looks
great, the hopper and rotor are both clear for easy viewing
of food levels, and the motor is out of sight if installed
on the back panel. Cleaning the unit is another story. As
any wheel type feeder, it is time consuming to clean the
rotor, but the drum is hollow in the center with the food
bins on the outer edge of the hopper, creating a tight space
to try to clean.
Weighing 625 grams, the feeder will do a
relatively good job staying in place atop the aquarium, but
it is highly recommended that you secure the unit to the
side of the aquarium, or secure the unit to the top of the
aquarium with velcro. The feeder measures 5.5" x 3.5" and
stands 7.5" tall with all accessories installed.

For those looking for an industrial grade
aquarium feeder, and are not running a tight feeding
schedule, look no further than the Lifeguard Automatic Fish
Feeder with Hopper. It is not battery operated, so you need
an extra outlet to operate this feeder. Configuring the
feeding times can be tricky, but once you get the hang of
setting the arms, it soon becomes second nature. Overall,
the automatic feeder is a highly accurate and reliable
feeder for your aquarium.
